Coconut shell charcoal grades explained
Fixed carbon, ash, volatile matter and moisture — what the four numbers on a charcoal analysis mean, what different buyers actually need, and how to read a lab report before you commit to a container.

Coconut shell charcoal is bought by activated carbon plants, briquette makers and metallurgical users, and those three buyers want measurably different material. The trade describes all of it as "high quality", which is useless. What separates grades is a short proximate analysis, and once you can read it the market gets much easier to navigate.
How it is made
Cleaned, de-fibred shells are carbonised in kilns, pits or drums. Heat drives off moisture and volatile compounds, leaving mostly carbon. Yield is roughly a quarter to a third of the raw shell weight, which is why shell price and charcoal price move together. How carefully the burn is controlled decides how consistent the finished lot is: an uncontrolled burn leaves pockets of under-carbonised material with high volatiles alongside over-burnt, ashy material.
The four numbers
A proximate analysis reports four values that together account for the whole sample.

Check whether figures are reported as-received or on a dry basis. The same lot looks meaningfully better on a dry basis because the moisture is excluded from the calculation, and suppliers are not always explicit about which they have quoted.
What each buyer actually needs
Activated carbon plants
The most demanding buyer. They want high fixed carbon, low ash, and consistency above all — an activation line is tuned to a feedstock, and a lot that swings between 68% and 78% fixed carbon produces carbon of varying pore structure. Hard, dense lumps matter because friable material breaks down into fines during handling and activation.
Shisha and barbecue briquette makers
Ash colour and odour matter more here, because the end user sees and smells the product. Fines are acceptable — the material gets ground and re-pressed anyway — so this buyer can often take a grade an activated carbon plant would reject, at a lower price.
Metallurgical and fuel users
Calorific value and low ash lead. Good coconut shell charcoal runs around 6,500–7,200 kcal/kg, comfortably above most wood charcoal, which is the reason it commands a premium as a fuel.
Size, hardness and fines
Lump charcoal is normally traded at 20–80 mm, with granular and fines as separate grades. Two questions are worth asking beyond the size range: what percentage of fines is acceptable in the lot, and how the material holds up to handling. Charcoal that arrives as half fines is a specification failure even if the analysis was perfect at the loading point.
Reading the lab report
- Confirm the standard used. ASTM D1762 is the common method for charcoal proximate analysis.
- Confirm as-received or dry basis, as above.
- Check the sampling. A certificate for a composite sample drawn across the lot means more than one drawn from a single bag.
- Match the date to the shipment. An analysis from a previous production run tells you about that run, not yours.
- For larger orders, arrange third-party inspection at loading rather than relying on the producer's own certificate.

Charcoal can be classified as a self-heating solid under UN 1361 for sea freight, and many carriers ask for a self-heating test report or an exemption certificate before they accept a booking. Settle this with your forwarder early — it is a common cause of delayed first shipments for buyers new to the product.

Common questions
What fixed carbon percentage is good for coconut shell charcoal?
70–80% is the normal range for a well-carbonised lot, with 70–75% typical of standard export grade. Consistency between shipments matters as much as the headline number, particularly for activated carbon production.
Why does ash content matter in charcoal?
Ash is inorganic residue that contributes nothing to performance. High ash usually means sand and soil came in with the raw shells, or the burn ran too hot. For activated carbon it lowers yield and quality; for shisha it produces visible residue the end user notices.
Is coconut shell charcoal dangerous goods for shipping?
It can be. Charcoal may be classified under UN 1361 as a self-heating solid, and many shipping lines require a self-heating test report or an exemption certificate before accepting the booking. Confirm the requirement with your forwarder before the container is fixed.
How much coconut shell charcoal fits in a container?
Roughly 14–16 MT in a 20ft and 24–26 MT in a 40ft high cube, depending on lump density and whether the material is bagged or in jumbo bags.
What is the difference between lump charcoal and briquettes?
Lump charcoal is carbonised shell in its natural broken form. Briquettes are made by grinding charcoal, mixing it with a binder such as starch, and pressing it to a shape. Buyers making briquettes purchase lump or fines as the raw material.
